Searching for information is the single most common thing people do with AI. Pew Research’s 2026 survey of 5,119 US adults found 49% use AI chatbots, and the top use case was not writing or coding; it was searching for information (42%). India is where this habit is growing fastest: ChatGPT’s India user base runs into the crores, and Perplexity drew more than a third of its global users from India.
So the question “Perplexity vs ChatGPT: which is better?” is not abstract. It is a practical buying decision Indian students, professionals and researchers face every month: pay for Perplexity Pro, pay for ChatGPT Plus, or pay nothing at all?
This comparison answers it from the India angle nobody else covers in one place: verified October-2026 pricing in rupees, hard evidence on which tool searches better, which telecom free offers are still alive in October 2026 (and which died), Hindi and local-search quality, and a clear who-should-pay-for-what framework, including a ₹0 stack for people who want the best of both without spending.
One important framing note: this is a comparison of AI search tools, not chatbots. Perplexity is an answer engine, built to find information and show its sources. ChatGPT is a conversational assistant that can also search the web. If you want the chatbot side of the comparison (writing, coding, creativity across ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Grok and Copilot), that is a separate guide: our best AI chatbots in India comparison covers it.
What each tool actually is
Perplexity is an answer engine. You ask a question, it searches the live web, synthesises an answer, and puts numbered citations next to nearly every claim so you can click through and verify. The paid tier (Pro) adds Pro Search (a slower, deeper search that reads more sources), a model picker with access to frontier models from multiple labs plus Perplexity’s own Sonar models, file uploads and analysis, more daily Deep Research runs, and an agentic browser called Comet.
ChatGPT Search is the web-search capability inside ChatGPT. Ask a question, and ChatGPT decides whether to browse the live web, then answers in its conversational style with some citations. Deep Research is ChatGPT’s separate long-form research agent: you give it a complex question and it spends several minutes reading dozens of sources and writes you a sourced report. Which ChatGPT plan you are on decides how much of this you get.
The practical difference: Perplexity is built for the moment you want a sourced answer, while ChatGPT is built for the moment you want to think something through, with web search available when it needs to.
The head-to-head: Perplexity vs ChatGPT Search
| Factor | Perplexity | ChatGPT Search |
|---|---|---|
| Core strength | Cited, verifiable answers | Conversational depth and synthesis |
| Citations | Inline, numbered, every major claim; click-through to exact sources | Present but inconsistent; fewer sources pulled per query in independent tests |
| Citation evidence | 89% of citations came from Google’s top-10 results (CiteLens, July 2026) | 30% in the same study (largely independent of ranking) |
| Real-time info | Live web by default | Browses when it decides it needs to; sometimes answers from training data without flagging staleness |
| Deep Research | ~20 runs/day on Pro (third-party testing) | ~10–25 runs/month on Plus depending on the 2026 schedule; limited or none on Go and Free; exact quotas change often, so check the in-product counter |
| Model choice | Picker: GPT-, Claude-, Gemini-class models + Sonar on Pro | Fixed per plan; no cross-lab model switching |
| Hindi / Hinglish | Supported; ~12% of India usage is Hindi (stat aggregator data) | Supported; generally stronger conversational fluency and nuance |
| Local/India queries | Strong on time-sensitive and local info (trains, news, market data) | Strong on explaining and contextualising; weaker on live local facts |
| Free tier | Unlimited quick searches + ~5 Pro searches/day | Free plan with usage caps; Go’s free India year (see below) |
| India paid price | ~₹1,980/mo web (INR, incl. GST) or ₹1,999/mo App Store | Go ₹399/mo, Plus ₹1,999/mo |
| UPI | Via App Store / Google Play billing; web billing is card-first, so check the plan page | Yes: UPI, cards and bank supported |
Search quality: what the evidence actually says
Opinions about these tools are cheap; evidence is rarer. Two 2026 studies are worth knowing about.
A July 2026 study by CiteLens tested 320 buyer queries across Perplexity, ChatGPT, Claude and Google AI Mode. Perplexity drew 89% of its citations from Google’s top-10 results (correlation 0.87); ChatGPT drew only 30%, with 70% of its sources sitting in neither Google’s nor Bing’s top-10. Caveats apply: it was buyer-intent queries only, and CiteLens sells AI-visibility services, so it has a commercial interest in how AI cites websites. Still, the direction matches what careful users observe: Perplexity stays close to prominent, rankable sources; ChatGPT wanders.
Separately, analysis of the CJR error-rate dataset (via pressonify.ai, August 2026) put Perplexity’s factual error rate at 37%, the lowest among six engines tested, against a cross-platform average above 60%. That is a humbling number for the whole category, and it is the single most important sentence in this guide: no AI search tool is safe to cite without opening the source. Perplexity makes verification easy because the sources are right there. The 37% figure means you should actually click them.
ChatGPT’s weakness here is specific: independent testers consistently find it pulls fewer sources per browsed answer than Perplexity, its citations are less consistent, and : the dangerous one: it sometimes answers from training data without telling you the information might be stale. For a fact you will act on (a price, a deadline, a regulation), that is a real risk.
Hindi, Hinglish and India local queries
This is where generic global comparisons go silent, and it matters more than most buyers realise. Your AI search tool is only as good as its answers to your questions: train statuses, sarkari scheme deadlines, a shop’s opening hours, a question asked in Hindi.
Perplexity handles Hindi and Hinglish queries, and independent usage stats put Hindi at roughly 12% of Perplexity’s India usage, which means the product team has real incentive to keep it working. In practice, Perplexity is the stronger pick for Hindi fact queries: current events, prices, dates, government information: anything where a wrong answer costs you.
ChatGPT is the stronger pick for Hindi as a language: explaining a concept, drafting a letter, brainstorming ideas, nuanced writing. Its conversational fluency in Hindi generally feels more natural.
For local, time-sensitive India queries (“is the train running on time”, “which shops near me sell this”, “what changed in the new scheme rules”), Perplexity’s live-web-first design is the better default. ChatGPT Search can answer these, but it is more likely to fall back on stale training data. One practical habit: ask the fact question to Perplexity first, then ask ChatGPT to explain what the answer means for you.
Pricing in India (October 2026)
Verified October-2026 figures, all hedged where the vendor page blocks direct checking:
Perplexity:
- Pro: about ₹1,980/month or ₹23,315/year when billed in INR on the web (prices include GST), or ₹1,999/month on the India App Store. (USD list price: $20/month or $200/year; the annual figure is sometimes shown as a limited-time offer, so verify on the plan page.)
- Max: about ₹23,309/month web, ₹19,900/month on the India App Store. This is a power-user tier; almost nobody reading this needs it.
- Free: unlimited quick searches, roughly 5 Pro searches per day (Perplexity does not publish the exact quota), and limited Deep Research. Genuinely usable.
- Payment: the web flow is card-first; subscribing through the App Store / Google Play routes through your normal Indian billing. Double-check whether GST is included at the surface you pay on.
ChatGPT:
- Go: ₹399/month: the India-first plan launched August 2025. UPI supported.
- Plus: ₹1,999/month. UPI supported.
- Pro: ₹19,900/month. (OpenAI added a lower $100 Pro tier in 2026, but Indian pricing on that is worth verifying on the plan page before you consider it.)
- Deep Research quotas move around: published 2026 figures range from ~10 to ~25 runs a month on Plus, limited or none on Go and Free. OpenAI has changed these limits at least twice this year, and its help docs now tell you to trust the in-product counter, which is the only number that actually matters for your account.
For most Indian users, the interesting question is not Pro vs Plus at ₹1,999; it is whether anything at ₹1,999 is needed at all, because October 2026 is a strange month for AI pricing in India, thanks to the telecom wars.
The free-offer status board: what is actually free in October 2026
Three big telecom-AI giveaways reshaped this market. Here is the current status of each, verified against October-2026 reporting:
1. Airtel × Perplexity Pro: DEAD (for new claims). Launched July 2025, worth ₹17,000 a year, open to Airtel’s 360-million-strong base. New redemptions closed on 16 January 2026. If you claimed it in time, your 12 months run from your activation date, so check your account. Two warnings: the claim flow collected a payment method, so disable auto-renew unless you want to be charged roughly ₹1,980/month when the free year ends; and Airtel has since replaced the perk with 12 months of Adobe Express Premium. Sensor Tower data tells the scale story: Perplexity hit ~22 million monthly active users in India at the October 2025 peak and was at ~14 million by July 2026. The free year built the habit; the pricing question decides what survives it.
2. ChatGPT Go free for India: LIVE. Announced November 2025: one year of ChatGPT Go free for Indian users, new and existing. As of October 2026 the offer is still live. The fine print: it is 12 months from your activation date, not a fixed calendar date, so check your account for the exact expiry. Activation still asks for a payment method (UPI or card), so switch off AutoPay if you only want the free year.
3. Jio × Google AI Pro: LIVE (check MyJio). 18 months of Google AI Pro (worth ₹35,100 at the ₹1,950/month list price), free for eligible Jio users, announced October 2025. Eligibility: 18+, active on a ₹349-or-above Unlimited 5G plan, claimed through the MyJio app, and you must keep an eligible plan active for the full 18 months or the benefit lapses. One how-to source pegs the claim window to around 29 October 2026, but these windows have been extended before, so verify in the app. (Storage figures differ across sources: 2TB at launch, some pages now say 5TB. Check the offer page.)
Why this matters for the Perplexity-vs-ChatGPT decision: the smartest money in October 2026 is not spent at all. The ₹0 free stack is Perplexity free (cited fact-checking) + ChatGPT Go free year for India (conversational depth) + Google AI Pro via Jio if you are eligible (Gemini, NotebookLM with higher limits, cloud storage). That covers 90% of what most people would use a paid plan for.
Who should pay for what: the decision framework
Forget the feature tables for a minute. Here is how the choice actually breaks down by person:
Students and exam aspirants → pay ₹0. The free stack (above) covers everything: Perplexity free for cited fact-checks, ChatGPT Go’s free India year for explanations, Gemini Notebook for your own notes and papers (see our complete Gemini Notebook guide), and our free AI courses roundup for building the skills behind the tools. The only paid tier worth considering is Perplexity Pro, and only if you are doing daily deep research: theses, dissertations, competitive exam current-affairs prep at scale.
Researchers, journalists and analysts → Perplexity Pro is the honest pick. Cited answers, a multi-model picker, ~20 Deep Research runs a day, and file analysis make it the better research instrument per rupee. ChatGPT Plus’s Deep Research is a real competitor (roughly 10–25 runs a month), but for daily research volume Pro’s pricing is hard to argue against.
Professionals, marketers and founders → probably ChatGPT, but think twice. If your day is writing, brainstorming, coding and planning, with occasional fact-checking, ChatGPT Go (₹399, currently free for a year) or Plus is the natural home. Pair it with Perplexity free for the 10% of queries where facts matter. Pay for Perplexity Pro only if cited research is literally your job. For the business side, our chatbot comparison goes deeper on which assistant fits which workflow.
The casually curious → pay ₹0. Perplexity free answers most questions with sources attached. ChatGPT free handles the rest. Nothing in this article suggests spending money before you have hit a free-tier wall at least three times.
Privacy-sensitive research → neither, run it locally. If your research involves confidential client material, unpublished work or personal data, neither cloud tool is the right home. Our Ollama tutorial shows how to run AI on your own laptop for free.
And one workflow note that beats any single subscription: find with Perplexity, think with ChatGPT. Get the cited facts from the answer engine, then paste them into ChatGPT and ask it to synthesise, compare or explain. Two free tools used in sequence outperform one paid tool used alone, and pairing both with a decent prompt framework (our 6-part framework works for research queries too) matters more than the plan you are on.
Google AI Mode: the third option you already have
One line on the elephant in the room: Google AI Mode, the AI answers inside Google Search, is free, fast, and genuinely good for shopping and local queries. It does not need a subscription decision because it comes with the search bar you already use. It earns its place as a third reference tool in the workflow above (quick local check in AI Mode, deep fact-check in Perplexity, thinking in ChatGPT), but it is not the subject of this comparison: you are not choosing whether to pay for it.
The verdict
For search as a task (cited answers, current facts, research), Perplexity is the better tool, and the 2026 evidence backs that up. For everything around the search (explaining, writing, reasoning, planning), ChatGPT is the better tool, and nobody seriously disputes that.
Most Indians should not pick one winner. The honest October-2026 answer is: use both free, know exactly when each one earns its keep, and pay only for the one that matches the work you actually do. The telecom offers have made the free tier genuinely excellent, so claim what’s on the table before you open your wallet.
